Occupy Gezi

Istanbul 2013.

The protests in Turkey in 2013 are a series of demonstrations of dissent against the government of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, which took place between 28 May 2013 and 30 August 2013.The protests originated from a sit-in of about fifty people demonstrating against the construction of a shopping center in place of the Gezi park in Istanbul. This protest had national resonance after the demonstrators were attacked by the police and this amplified the reason for dissent towards more general political bodies, ultimately giving rise to demonstrations throughout the country that were violently repressed by the government. The riot squads employed by the government have distinguished themselves by an attitude bordering on legality, with massive use of pepper spray on unarmed people, throwing tear gas at eye level and the addition of stinging agents to the water of the TOMAs, the trucks equipped with hydrants.
